How to impress your boss in a new job in 10 steps

How to impress your anfhrer in a new job in 10 stepsHow to impress your boss in a new job in 10 stepsYou aced the interview, negotiated the job offer, and now youre a brand new employee. CongratulationsNow is not the time, however, to relax and put your efforts on cruise control. The first few months at a new companyare critical and you need to put serious time into showing the powers-that-be they made a smart decision in hiring you. Here are 10 ways to impress your boss in a new job and set your path to success.Impressing your boss entails being1. On timeBeing late, especially as a habit, is one of the fastest ways to get on your teamberaters bad side. Lay your clothes out the night before, gas up your vehicle after work, not before, and set your alarm for twenty minutes earlier than you think you should. Seeing you at your station on time every morning will show your boss you take your job seriously.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more2. ProductiveAvoid the temptation of checking social media, texting your spouse during work time, or zoning out an hour before quitting time.Create a to-do list and strive to get as much done as possible every day. Do your part to positively affect the companys success. And, of course, be ready to talk about your effort duringmeetings with your boss.3. Emotionally matureIf a boss were to make a list of annoying behavior, whiny and immature would be at the top of the list. Handle yourself like an adult. Dont fuss with co-workers or engage in gossip. If you have a legitimate complaint, take it to your boss when yourecalm, exudeconfidence, and lay out the situation in a matter-of-fact way.4. Easy to work withLazy, complaining, negative people are real drags on office happiness. Stay positive, be mindful of others and their opinions, and do your job efficiently. Many promotions have occurred because a coach has noticed anemployee can ge talong with alldifferent types of people.5. ReliableIf you say you will do something, make sure you complete it to the best of your ability. You might also call this follow through or being on the ball, because they all require you staying organized so nothing falls through the cracks. And if you know that youre going to miss a deadline or not complete something as needed, be transparent and inform your boss as early in the process as possible so they can make adjustments.6. FocusedBringing your personal problems to work is foolish and will make your boss look at you in a negative light. Shelve problems with your spouse, children, friends, or issues with your health anddeal with them after hours. If you cant avoid addressing them, take amental health dayand do it privately outside of work.7. HonestNever, ever lie to your boss or misrepresent your skills. This will come back to bite you and may be the thing that gets you fired. Be diplomatically honest when asked about projects, co-w orkers, or any other subject requiring your input and opinion.8. ResourcefulNo matter what your role entails, youll likely zustrom into some issues that youve never encountered before or are unsure about how to proceed with. Rather than automatically running to your boss for help, take steps to resolve that issue on your own such as by investigating the issue, thinking through what possible solutions might be from a common sense perspective, observing your colleagues, and if you have to, even using Google to give you a possible solution.9. RespectfulBeing respectful encompasses a lot of positive behaviors that youd be surprised is often lacking among new hires, such as having proper manners (please and thank you), being a good listener, being open-minded, not making assumptions, and basically not being an unreasonable jerk.10. HelpfulPitch in on open projects, volunteer for committees, and always take advantage of opportunities to contribute positively to your company. By offering t o shoulder more responsibility where it makes sense, your boss can see your tenacity and commitment to your job. And if youre helpful in a way that doesnt interfere with your normal work and doesnt pander directly to your boss, it wont look appear that youre just sucking up.- - - These helpful tips will prepare you to easily make a great impression on your new boss. By consistently displaying these behaviors, you make a clearpoint that you care about your job, your performance, and the company that employs you. Trust us, your boss WILL notice. This article first appeared on Kununu. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

The single best tip for a job interview to get the job

The single best tip for a job interview to get the job The single best tip for a job interview to get the job In fifteen years writing this newsletter, the single best tip I’ve given, that has come back to me over, and over, and over again, is this:When it gets to that part of the interview with your future boss where they ask, “well, do you have any questions for me?”, say yes, and ask…“How do I help you get a gold star on your review next year?”This bit of advice has helped more people in more interviews than any other bit of advice I’ve shared in the last decade-and-a-half that I’ve been writing to you. Why?Well, the interview process lends itself to self-absorption. We spend so much of the time talking about ourselves that we can sound like one of those people who talks only about themselves.Or, conversely, we become “job analysis engineers” and ask all sorts of questions about the job and reporting structure and how it fits in with the company’s five-year plan and so on.I love getting questions from candidates in interviews, but I do have to admit that I feel they†™re not quite getting the point of a “face-to-face” interview when they pull out six pages of typed, single-spaced questions and promptly bury their nose in their papers without making eye contact. We get so obsessed with the details of the job that we forget about the work.Working together and being a good addition to the team mean being concerned with how you are making the team successful. And that means being concerned with how well you are helping your boss succeed.Asking this question shows that you have empathy. It shows that you have an interest in your boss’ career and future success. It shows that you are not just a self-absorbed “what’s-in-it-for-me” kind of person. And it shows that you know you are there to “give” as much as you are there to “get”.Hundreds of members like you have told me how the interviewer’s face lights up when asked this question. I have heard time and time and time again from our almost ten million members how effective it’s b een in interviews. (And, remember, you want the vibe to be a cool relaxed Vince Vaughn, not an obsequious Steve Buscemi.)The gold star question is an easy tip to implement in your job search: it’s easy to do, easy to understand, and it’s easy to measure. And that makes it my best bit of career advice in over a decade of doling it out.So thank you, folks, for paying attention, trying it out, and letting me know how it goes…I’m rooting for you!

Accounting and Finance Job Market

Accounting and Finance Job Market Accounting and Finance Job Market In today’s accounting and finance job market, unemployment rates are low, and specialized talent is in high demand. This situation is magnified with a short supply of accountants and experienced finance staff, such as financial analysts. What does this mean for you, if you’re looking for a job? Plenty. According to the latest report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics for the second quarter of 2017, finance and accounting positions have unemployment rates well below the national rate of 4.4 percent. Statistics like these, showing the unemployment rates by occupation, demonstrate how job seekers have the upper hand in today’s finance job market: Purchasing managers: 1.1% Payroll and timekeeping clerks: 1.4% Compliance officers: 1.8% Financial managers: 1.8% Bookkeeping, accounting, and auditing clerks: 2.0% Loan interviewers and clerks: 2.0% Accountants and auditors: 2.2% Securities, commodities, and financial services sales agents: 2.3% Financial analysts: 2.5% What’s more, in our 2017 Benchmarking the Accounting and Finance Function report, 62 percent of large companies said their accounting and finance teams are at least somewhat understaffed, citing challenges in finding skilled talent in the hiring process. With multiple options available in this accounting and finance job market, candidates like you are in the driver’s seat. Where do you want to go? What do you want to do? Here are seven things to keep in mind if you want to make the most of your job search and pick a company that is right for you: 1. Narrow down an industry and location Have you weighed the prospects of working in public versus private accounting? Both offer very different career paths. Another consideration is industry. As an accounting and finance professional, you have a large choice of industries, including healthcare, manufacturing, real estate, technology, construction, financial services and more. And there are further breakdowns within each industry, such as investment and commercial banking. As for location, think about whether you are willing to move to a different city or part of the country or whether you'd prefer to stay where you are right now. 2. Consider what role you’d like You should assess all the different opportunities available in the accounting and finance field. A mentor can help with this, and your personal network may be useful, too. Joining a professional organization is another great way to network and learn more about the different roles. 3. Research companies It’s important when you’re looking for jobs that you consider company culture and find an organization with similar values to your own. A compatible office environment can really make a difference at work. 4. Evaluate your career path and credentials Certain credentials, education or skills may give you a leg up when applying for a position. If you are having trouble securing the position you want, consider boosting your skillset with professional development, including getting a CPA or another certification. 5. Search for finance and accounting jobs A professional recruiter can help you find the right fit for you. Once you find jobs you’re interested in, start sending out applications and following up with hiring managers. Find out how we help you find a job, and submit your resume. 6. Prepare for an interview If you are selected for an interview, you can prepare by researching the company and coming up with questions of your own. Being well informed about the company is a great way to show your dedication and stand out from other applicants. It may also be useful to showcase your career lessons. 7. Research salaries and prepare to negotiate Accountants today have negotiating power in their favor to command a competitive salary. You should strive for a complete compensation package including benefits, stocks and vacation time. You can read our Salary Guide for up-to-date salary ranges for more than 400 accounting and finance positions. If you are interested in a career change, switching to accounting and finance may be a good choice in today’s market. Such a career leap may even increase your chances of landing a better paying position. Below-average unemployment rates have given job seekers the upper hand in today’s finance job market. Now is the time for candidates to determine their ideal work situation, search for jobs and ace the interview. This is especially true for finance and accounting professionals, who have room to thoroughly evaluate employment opportunities and pick the right fit for them. VISIT OUR CAREER CENTER

College Student Resume Example With Summary Statement

College Student Resume Example With Summary Statement College Student Resume Example With Summary Statement When a college student has to prepare a  resume, it can be difficult because they may not have a lot of work experience. The good news is that your academic, extracurricular, and other experiences can still show an employer that you have the qualifications and know-how to do the job - if you present this information correctly on your resume. What to Include in Your Resume Begin with a resume summary statement. A  resume summary statement  (also known as a resume summary or summary of qualifications) is a list or a few sentences at the top of a resume that highlights your qualifications for a position. It is a great way to quickly show an employer why you are a strong candidate for a position. Resume summary statements can be useful at any career level, including as a college student. The summary statement should be located below your name and contact information. In a few sentences (or bullet points), state some of your skills and accomplishments that make you an ideal fit for the job. Try to include  keywords  from the job listing. Mention a strong GPA. Along with your school and degree information, include any achievements, such as a high  GPA  (3.5 or above) and any academic awards (Dean’s List, scholarships, etc.). Emphasize your teamwork and leadership skills. Employers are always interested in job candidates who have demonstrated personal initiative in assuming leadership roles and who have proven themselves to be productive team members. Be sure to describe all leadership positions you have held within campus organizations or in academic team projects. Emphasize All Related Experience. Even if you do not have much employment history, you can include  volunteer experiences and any extracurriculars related to the job. You can put all these experiences in a section titled “Related Experience,” or divide them into different sections. Tips for Writing an Effective Resume for a College Student Highlight Your Education. As a student, you should highlight your academic successes at the beginning of your resume, before the “Experience” description. If you have completed any projects or taken courses related to the job you are applying for, you can include these as well. Finesse your Experience Section. Even if you don’t have actual work experience, you should still include an “Experience” section in your resume. In this section, you can describe your college program, internships, or volunteer work you have performed. Instead of using the header “Professional Experience” for this section, use a more general title such as “Research and Analytical Experience,” “Related Experience,” or “Experience Highlights.” Look at Other Resume Examples. Look at some  resume examples  or  templates  to guide your writing. A resume example can help you decide what kind of content to include, and a template can help you format your resume. However, be sure to tailor a resume example to fit your own experiences and the job you are applying for. Proofread. Proofread  your resume carefully before submitting it. A clean, error-free resume will show that you are professional and that you pay attention to details. Ask a friend or family member, or a college career counselor, to read the resume for you as well. It’s a smart way to catch the interest of a hiring manager right off the bat.SHOWCASE YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS: Don’t hesitate to “toot your own horn” on your resume: describe your GPA (if it’s above 3.5), academic achievements, and contributions to campus and community organizations.HIGHLIGHT RELATED EXPERIENCE: Participating in extracurricular activities and campus organizations helps to develop teamwork, communications, and leadership skills that are very attractive to employers. The 2 types of knowledge (and the application of it)

The 2 types of knowledge (and the application of it) The 2 types of knowledge (and the application of it) Although the paper that introduced the theory of evolution to the world was published in 1858, Charles Darwin first conceived of the idea in 1838.He had spent five years on the HMS Beagle as a geologist when he noticed something peculiar in his records: the geological distribution of fossils and wildlife showed a pattern of change between different species. At the time, the controversial predecessor to Darwin’s theory was transmutation, which rightly suggested that one species changes into another, but which wrongly assumed that this occurs due to some spontaneous life-force, or laws that kick into play at different predetermined times by God, or some other mysterious but unidentified process.Critics saw it as a feeble attempt at the materialization of life, an idea that had taken hold of the world ever since the Enlightenment, without any compelling evidence to support its radical claim. That initial paper published by Darwin (along with Alfred Russel Wallace, who had come to simila r conclusions), however, was strong where transmutation was weak: it gave a specific process for this change. In any population of a species, we have variation in phenotype (observable characteristics), arising from mutations that occurs in the genome and from the epigenetic changes that occur during life, and the result is that different individuals in a group of organisms show differences in their ability to adapt to their environment - some do well and survive; others don’t.This simple process of variation and selection explains how a common ancestor produces the diversity of life we observe in the biosphere. In this way, life is - as Jonas Salk, the famed medical researcher put it - “an error-making and error-correcting process.” It gives us many attempts at overcoming the challenges of any environment by introducing variation, and it then selects the correct answer by eliminating what doesn’t work.Useful knowledge survives and gets passed down to newer generations, who can then use this knowledge to enhance their effectiveness. But this, however, isn’t the only kind of knowledge available to us.Experimentation and refinementThe actual process of learning (or getting smarter) extends beyond our predetermined genome, but evolution has set a precedent in form.Even the learning we do in the world follows a variation and selection (via elimination) pattern. We try lots of different things, we see what works, and then based on the results, we eliminate the competing options, selecting for the skills that will be most useful in the future, too.Cognitive neuroscience has a theory of mind (called predictive processing) that suggests that the human brain is a prediction engine, which consistently creates our perception of the world based on our past interactions within similar environments. In the beginning, when you are young, there isn’t much information to go off of, so you get mostly unconstrained inputs from the external world into your brain, but as you get older, you start to filter through this variety for usefulness, making better distinctions. You create mental concepts in your mind about what is important and what is not, and then these concepts shape your future perceptions by using the already-selected knowledge to further select knowledge. This entire process is mostly intuitive, and what keeps it updating is pain/pleasure, which tells your body that a certain perception and your corresponding reaction should either be reinforced or not. But some forms of experience on the pain/pleasure axis like surprise and awe can be used to intentionally tell your mind that something unexpected was experienced, too, encouraging you to consciously readjust the conceptual model.Whether you are learning to play a sport or simply trying to create a more accurate mental model of reality in your mind, you are working with a variety of experiences, and within those experiences, you have to choose and reinforce the ones that are the most u seful to you.In this way, everything that you do is essentially an experiment that gets refined and corrected with experience and practice. The difference between you and, say, a professional tennis player is almost certainly that they have a genome that makes them more suitable to play their sport, but more importantly, they have intuitive knowledge embedded in their brain from all of the predictive processing they have done, in a very specific environment, to refine their sense for what works and what doesn’t.The same can be said for great artists and scientists, entrepreneurs and investors, and other everyday folks who do what they do well. Our brain is a prediction engine that builds knowledge and gets smarter as it better aligns what it needs to do with the demands of the environment.Conjectures and their refutationPredictive processing alone likely isn’t what makes humans unique. If it really is the process by which we make sense of the world, the chances are that some form of it appears in other animals in nature, too. What takes humans one step beyond this simple empirical knowledge-building is that we can think in abstract concepts, with a complex language, and then share this knowledge between us within culture. The best formal system that we have ever devised for this is the scientific method, which operates based on a combination of asking questions, formulating hypotheses, and then testing those hypotheses based on the data collected from our experiments and observations. In the same way that we have variation and selection in evolution (and in our empirical mental modeling), the philosopher of science Karl Popper suggested that we have it in scientific inquiry, too, where we start by formulating a conjecture based on incomplete information (a theory), and we improve on our conjectures by refuting them.Science, in this way, can never be completely certain of anything but it can only get more and more correct as we refute bad conjectures and replace them with better ones and so on. And in order for something to be considered a scientific theory, it has to be capable of being proven wrong. We don’t need to just rely on our mind updating itself by putting it in different environments to gain knowledge; we can also make use of the abstract knowledge we collectively build in culture.Whereas personal experimentation and refinement can improve a brain by directly building its intuitive understanding, abstract theories (based on evidence) can do the same thing without us needing to go through the same process that someone else did to collect that knowledge. There is, of course, some important practical knowledge that is lost in the translation from the abstract to the concrete, just like empirical knowledge (from predictive processing) lacks the rigor that comes with having a scientific community constantly challenging you, but both are capable of adapting our minds in a way that is more useful to us.By updating our mental model, goo d conjectures, based on strong collective evidence, can make our predictions of reality more accurate. The takeawayKnowledge, whether implicit or explicit, underlies everything that we do.By virtue of evolution, much of this knowledge is encoded in our genome, which programs us before we are born. It has been selected based on generations and generations of efforts to survive, implanting us with a general template of a phenotype that is best suited for our environment. In the 21st century, however, as our environment continues to change at an exponential rate, the knowledge encoded in our genome is becoming less and less sufficient for our attempts at making sense of the world.Fortunately, evolution has also programmed us with the ability to learn. With a mind that experiments, predicts, and corrects, we can build empirical knowledge to adapt us to other relevant environments. We can use our pain/pleasure axis and the affect that we experience as surprise/awe to self-correct into build ing an intuitive understanding of the world that allows us to master our surroundings and their demands. To further augment this intuitive understanding, we can also stand on the shoulders of the giants that have come before us in culture by using their theories and evidence to further sharpen our mental model of reality. There are many ways to define intelligence, and different definitions cater to different expectations, but ultimately, it’s about how effectively an agent can make sense of and navigate its environment.Knowledge and its application is the process that we build everything else on, and it starts with what we do to feed it.Want to think and live smarter? Ask Yourself These Questions Before You Accept the Job Offer

Ask Yourself These Questions Before You Accept the Job Offer Ask Yourself These Questions Before You Accept the Job Offer Ask Yourself These Questions Before You Accept the Job Offer Before accepting the job offer, ask yourself these eight questions to ensure it’s the right fit. Editor's Note: This article was originally published on our sister site, TopInterview. Congratulations! You secured a job offer. After crafting a catchy cover letter, optimizing your resume, and acing the interview, the company has decided you're the perfect fit for the job. But now it's your turn to ask: Is this job the perfect fit for me? It's tempting to quickly blurt out YES! and accept the offer on the spot, especially when you're eager for a new opportunity. But it's important to carefully consider what's on the table before signing your new contract. Ask yourself these eight questions before accepting the job. 1. Am I excited about the job? If you're looking for a new job, there's a reason. Maybe you feel stuck in your current position, you moved to a new city, or you were let go. These situations make it easy to feel stuck or even desperate. Yet, don't let these feelings push you to accept a job offer without careful consideration. Ask yourself: Am I excited about this job, the company, and the people I'll work with? Or am I excited because I received an offer? If you find the answer is the latter, give yourself more time to find an opportunity that truly thrills you. 2. Will this job bring me closer to achieving my career goals? You probably heard this question in your job interview and you probably hated it but it's time to honestly ask yourself where you want to be in five years, even 10 years. Is this position going to help you get there? If you find the job won't help you advance toward your career goals, then maybe it's worth reconsidering. 3. What will my new day-to-day look like? Taking a new job means your life is going to change. First, carefully consider these changes within your professional life. Make sure you understand what your new duties will be and that you have a good idea of what your day-to-day tasks will entail. Will the work fulfill you? Help you acquire new skills? Push you to the next level of your career? Second, think about how this new job will affect your personal life. Consider your commute time and your schedule. Will this new job require you to hire a nanny? Work overtime? Is it worth it? 4. Do I support the company's mission? You don't want to accept a position within a company that has a mission you don't support. You should have gotten a good feel for this as you researched the company before your interview and after asking the hiring manager questions. Now, take the time to make sure you feel good about the work you'll be doing. Chances are, your gut will kick in when thinking about this question. 5. Will I fit into the company's culture? Although fitting in feels more like the concern of a high school student, it's just as important in your professional life. During your interview, did you take note of the company culture? The people who work there? The style? The atmosphere? Ethical standards? Remember, there's a chance you might spend more time with these people than with your family, so make sure you feel like you can fit in with ease. Related: 5 Ways to Evaluate Company Culture During a Job Interview 6. Is there room to grow? You don't want to hop into a position where, after a year, you feel stuck and like you're spinning your wheels. After all, that might be the reason you're seeking this new job opportunity in the first place. Once again, revisit your interview. If the manager didn't explicitly talk about career growth, did you ask? Will the company support your eagerness to grow and advance? If not, you might find yourself in this same position three years from now. 7. What do the benefits look like? Although we might not want to admit that money helps make our decisions, it usually does. Take a good look at your salary offer as well as the benefits. Do a quick cost analysis, breaking down the salary, health insurance, paid time off, sick policy, and retirement plan. How's this company compare to your current or past positions? Typically, there's wiggle room, so polish your negotiating skills before signing the contract. 8. Will this job make me happier? Now that you've considered the logistics, ask yourself one last question: Will this job enhance my life and make me happier? You might have a gut feeling answering this question, but if you need, jot down a pros and cons list. Include all the questions listed above. Talk with your mentors, your significant other, your family anyone who can help you gain additional perspective. Accepting a new job is a big move, so be sure you feel good about your decision. 3 ways to salvage a meeting thats gone sour after a big conflict

3 ways to salvage a meeting that's gone sour after a big conflict 3 ways to salvage a meeting that's gone sour after a big conflict We’ve all seen this play out before: A team member is minding her own business during a meeting, but when she speaks up, she’s targeted by an outspoken, know-it-all in the group who just has to say why he thinks she’s wrong. This is what you can do  as a manager to diffuse the situation - either during or after the meeting.Figure out this crucial pointUC Berkeley’s Guide to Managing Human Resources talks about what to do during disagreements among team members.“The goal of conflict resolution is not to decide which person is right or wrong; the goal is to reach a solution that everyone can live with,” the guide says. “Looking first for needs, rather than solutions, is a powerful tool for generating win/win options. To discover needs, you must try to find out why people want the solutions they initially proposed. Once you understand the advantages their solutions have for them, you have discovered their needs.”Use this line during the meetingThis could help you literal ly make your voice heard. After exploring various examples of dicey situations,  Joseph Grenny, author, keynote speaker, business performance social scientist, and cofounder of VitalSmarts, offers a line that managers can use to “interrupt the chaos”  in the Harvard Business Review.“One of the best ways to change the emotion of a group is to change its tempo,”  he writes. “As you attempt to intervene, decelerate your pace of speech. You may need to raise your voice a decibel or two to be heard above the rumble. But once you’ve attracted attention, lower your voice and speed. For example, you might say slowly and calmly, ‘Hey team, let me take a moment to point out something I’m noticing.’ ”Get both parties in the same roomHR expert Susan M. Heathfield writes in The Balance that you should “meet with the antagonists together” when diffusing issues that arise at work. Perhaps this could be done after the meeting that became stressful.“Let each briefly summariz e their point of view, without comment or interruption by the other party. This should be a short discussion so that all parties are clear about the disagreement and conflicting views. Intervene if either employee attacks the other employee. This is not acceptable,” she writes. As a manager, it’s your job to feel out the situation and take the appropriate course of action in the moment, before things get too intense.

12 Habits of People Who Always Fulfill Their Dreams

12 Habits of People Who Always Fulfill Their Dreams 12 Habits of People Who Always Fulfill Their Dreams Extraordinarily motivated people are driven to go above and beyond; they are trusted by others, focused, and confident in their own abilities. They dream of endless possibilities and tend to be extremely satisfied with their lives. They are more likely to receive a raise or a dream project, maintain longer relationships, and get promoted or recruited more than their unmotivated peers. The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential... These are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence. Confucius Seeking and achieving your dreams means you are really living your life. Ready to get motivated and become all you can be? Try some or all of these habits of extraordinarily motivated people and perhaps you too will find the courage to live a life of fulfilled dreams. 1. They’re Internally Motivated It is their intrinsic desire to be their best selves and succeed that drives their motivation. They are internally driven- not pushed- toward new adventures, the unfolding journey, and the possible outcomes- they relish challenging themselves, learning, and exploring. 2. They Don’t Waste Time Judging They objectively observe the successes and mistakes of others and learn from them instead of judging or comparing themselves. They don’t waste their time with judgmental, gossipy people either. 3. They Are Humble They are willing to admit they made a mistake and apologize. They encourage feedback from others and use it to take steps in the right direction. 4. They Look at the Upside Instead of focusing on what’s not working and bad experiences- which so many of us tend to do- they instead focus on what is working and their successes. If they find themselves overthinking a miscalculation, they automatically flip a switch and think about those things they did do right. 5. They Are Authentic They are true to themselves despite what others think- they don’t live their lives solely to please others. 6. They Push Beyond Their Comfort Zone Extraordinarily motivated people face discomfort head on- they never choose the easy route- to get what they want. They push themselves out of their comfort zone and get rid of those annoying internal voices that say, “You are limited in what you can do.” They trust their abilities and know they will come out on top. 7. They Continue to Learn They read a lot and are brilliant observers- they are always watching and searching for new, more efficient, and faster ways to achieve. They understand that in order to grow as a person, they must always continue to learn. 8. They Know What They Want They have a clear vision of what they want their lives to look like and who they want to be. Their clarity comes with the wisdom to know what things to harness and what things to avoid. Their mottos are, “Never say never” and “Anything is possible.” 9. They Don’t Give Up When they stumble over that proverbial bump in the road, they problem solve, come up with a plan, take action, and get past it. They understand that a sure way to lose a battle is to quit- which is not a part of their vocabulary or an option. 10. They Don’t Blame Others They never blame others for their failures. They understand that ultimately they alone are in charge of their actions and choices and no other. 11. They Take Time for Themselves They know that in order to stay motivated and on top of their game, they have to carve out time for themselves. Rewards of time away from it all and taking care of themselves are more important to them than material possessions. 12. They Surround Themselves With Motivators Their friends are those who are trustworthy, positive, and supportive and who bring out the best in them unconditionally. Their friends help them take on the world side by side and, when needed, help them get back on their feet again. More From Inc. Turns out hand sanitizer is actually useless especially during flu season

Turns out hand sanitizer is actually useless especially during flu season Turns out hand sanitizer is actually useless especially during flu season Washing my hands is a drag. It requires physical effort and accessories like towels. The trial is greater still when it comes to washing my children’s hands. And because my children are lazier  than I am  and far less concerned about proper hygiene, it’s so much easier to pump out some  hand sanitizer  into their little palms and call it a day. Unfortunately, washing your hands with soap and water is the single most effective way to prevent disease, especially during  flu season. Hand sanitizer, however, isn’t all that good at sanitizing hands- especially when it has alcohol content below 60%.“Many studies have found that sanitizers with an alcohol concentration between 60â€"95% are more effective at killing germs than those with a lower alcohol concentration or non-alcohol-based hand sanitizers,”  according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “Although alcohol-based hand sanitizers can inactivate many types of microbes very effectively when used correctlyâ €¦ Soap and water are more effective than hand sanitizers.”Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Even if you manage to get your hands on some hospital-grade hand sanitizer, the high alcohol content isn’t enough to guarantee protection during flu season. Because most people do not use hand sanitizer appropriately. Studies have shown that hand sanitizers work best when applied to the entire hand, not just the palm. And they work best in clinical settings, where the hands are basically clean but may have come in contact with dangerous pathogens. Soiled hands, commonly associated  with kids or parenting, simply do not mix with hand sanitizer.“Hands may become very greasy or soiled in community settings, such as after people handle food, play sports, work in the garden, or go camping or fishing,” according to the CDC. “When hands are heavily soiled or greasy, hand sanitizer s may not work well.”Let’s say you manage to procure and apply 95 percent alcohol-based hand sanitizer to your otherwise clean hands. Even  then, it might not work. Hand sanitizer is less effective than hand washing when it comes to killing specific pathogens, such as  Clostridium difficile, and likely cannot remove or inactivate harmful chemicals. Indeed,  studies have shown  that people who exclusively use hand sanitizer, instead of soap and water, have higher levels of pesticides in their bodies. At the end of the day, hand sanitizer is a good way to protect yourself and your family from disease when you’re dealing with clean hands, or unable to get to the sink. But at home, with soiled hands, soap and water is the safest bet- thrashing children notwithstanding. This article originally appeared on Fatherly. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people
